520 $a Spectral analysis for shared periodicities in f $\ sb0 $ data from conversations between same-sex strangers was performed as a measure of vocal synchrony. 12 minute-long samples were selected from 24 conversations between normal college aged subjects on the basis of participant ratings, yielding 3 high rated and 3 low rated cases within each gender group. Ratings scores combined participants' ratings of the entire conversation with their later ratings of audio recordings of selected minutes from the conversations. In both ratings, 5-point Likert scale items were used to indicate the overall positiveness (e.g. confidence and relaxation) of a participant's own experience, their perception of their partner' s experience, and perceived levels of attraction and rapport between partners.
520 $a Extraction of f $\ sb0 $ was performed on recorded signals from accelerometer contact microphones. The f $\ sb0 $ data were smoothed to 6 samples per second, log transformed, and normalized. Synchrony was demonstrable on the basis of spectral and cross-spectral analyses of these data. Weak positive effects in synchrony measures were found between the women's high and low ratings groups but not between the men's. These ratings effects were roughly equal or greater in magnitude compared with those obtained in other measures such as overall talk-time (in both men and women) and f $\ sb0 $ mean (in women only).
520 $a Pseudointeractions, comprised of paired monologues spoken by the selected dialogue participants prior to their actual interactions, were also explored. Though synchrony was also measurable in these false interactions, significant correlations with ratings among the women's samples suggested that rather than being merely artifactual, synchrony between monologues may have been predictive of the more positive rated dialogues in this group.
