Parent Ratings of Children with Autism on the Evaluation of Sensory Processing (ESP) The purpose of this study was to identify items on the Evaluation of Sensory Processing (ESP), a sensory history questionnaire, that differentiate between children with autism and typically developing children. The responses of 41 parents of children with autism were compared with the responses of 41 parents of typically developing children using the Mann-Whitney U test for each item and for each sensory domain. All sensory domains of the ESP differentiated between groups. Item analysis revealed 114 of the 185 item significantly differentiated between groups (p < .05), distributed throughout every sensory domain. Results of the present study indicate that items representing both under- and overresponsiveness to tactile, auditory, and vestibular input are relevant to children with autism. Item ratings indicative of seeking intense proprioceptive input were particularly prevalent among children with autism.
