An interesting phenomenon has surfaced in Irish literature of the past century which raises imminent questions concerning the essence of a common national identity in which national figures---whether they are literary, mythological, or political---represent the "universal" feeling of nationalistic pride. William Butler Yeats, Ireland's distinguished poet and playwright, Cuchulain, a key figure of Irish legend and lore, and Padraic Pearse, the motivating political voice behind the Easter Uprising in 1916, come to mind as representations of national identity for the Irish people. But ironically, it is the plays of William Shakespeare---English born and bred---which serve as the pervasive ideological model for Ireland's past glories and turmoils, for his texts are reinscribed throughout fiction, poetry, popular culture, and particularly, twenteith-century Irish drama.

The primary goal of this study is to elucidate Shakespeare's influence on the dramatic genre in Ireland through an examination of two representative Irish playwrights---Sean O'Casey and Brian Friel---and explicate how, through reinscriptions of Shakespeare's drama in their own works, and particularly through interpretations of 1 Henry IV, 2 Henry IV, and Henry V, their plays have precipitated a wave of national identity in Modern and Contemporary Irish drama.

Both the Abbey Theatre and the Field Day Theatre Company afforded playwrights a stage on which to voice their political and artistic convictions, and it was on this stage that O'Casey and Friel spread a patriotic consciousness through their plays which reflects Shakespeare's messages of national identity and colonization in his Henriad.

Although critics have long placed Shakespeare within the hegemonic discourse of the West, this dissertation intends to argue that this assimilation of a supposedly colonizing force in literature is in fact faulty because his works represent and have been recognized by Irish writers as the voice of the Other as he attempts to move the colonized (who have been categorized as the Object) into the position of the Subject---a category that has been previously occupied by the hegemonic forces of the past and present.

In particular, I will show how Irish dramatists have appropriated Shakespeare and the language of the colonizer to reconceptualize their position and support their revision of the Irish as Subject.
