Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2005.
This dissertation studies regional mortality variation in China using data collected in the 2000 census. It first constructs sex-specific life tables for 2,870 county-level and 377 other higher level administrative units. It then turns to study mortality variation and its regional pattern in China using the mortality parameters from the county-level life tables. The dissertation examines three aspects of regional mortality variation: life expectancy at birth, age patterns of mortality, and sex ratio of infant mortality. Spatial autoregression models are used to investigate the association between socioeconomic variables and mortality variation. The dissertation finds that while there are considerable variations in mortality in China, they are mainly driven by socioeconomic development. Overall, China is more homogeneous in mortality than otherwise would be expected.
