The relationship between job satisfaction and various other factors is of growing interest to researchers and managers in the expanding global marketplace. Levels of job satisfaction can be impacted as a result of a variety of both controllable and uncontrollable factors. The current study compared various demographic factors of employees in a public governmental agency in Taiwan with respect to their reported levels of job satisfaction and motivation. This research was based on data collected using the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaires (MSQ) short form to measure job satisfaction. As predicted the results supported the hypotheses that the age, tenure on the job and job position led to differences in job satisfaction. However, the expectation that gender would also impact the level of job satisfaction was not supported by the results, which indicated that gender differences did not have an impact. The data generated by the respondents in this study indicate that some demographic variables can have an impact on job satisfaction.

Recommendations about future research suggest looking at other variables such as organization climate, organization culture, leadership behaviors, organization commitment etc., and undertaking analysis with multiple variables. It was concluded that the organization needs to provide well-paying jobs, suitable working conditions, assign autonomy, create a safe workplace, have equitable distribution of rewards and procedural justice, set up a two-way communication performance appraisal system, set up various and effective reward systems, increase job satisfaction of the civil servants and provide clear promotion opportunities to employees.

Overall, the results supported most of the hypotheses and demonstrated that age, position and job tenure differences can and do play an important role in affecting job satisfaction of public sector employees in Taiwan.
