The purpose of this study is to (a) implement a teacher-based advisor/advisee program for "at-risk" middle school students that fail to meet district standards for grade level promotion, and (b) to evaluate the effect of the program on student achievement.

The student sample consisted of 40 middle school students in 7th and 8th grade from Shasta View Middle School in Redding, California. The teacher sample consisted of 20 volunteer teachers from the same school. Half of the students were selected by the teachers to participate in a teacher-based advisory group that met once a week to review grades, attendance and behavior. The other half of the students not selected became the control group, which did not receive the treatment.

Grade point averages, behavioral referrals, attendance rates and student attitude opinions were collected. Descriptive statistics and Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) were used to compare and analyze the mean differences between the experimental and control group.

Quantitative data from this study suggested that teacher-based advisor/advisee programs have a positive effect on student attitudes and attendance. The data conversely showed that teacher-based advisor/advisee programs do not have a significant effect on grade point averages and behavior. Even though the analysis of the data demonstrated no significant differences in grades and behavior, there was movement in the right direction for improvement, but not enough to be statistically significant, presumably due to the small sample size. The GPA results were, however practically significant (effect size > .50).

The analysis of the data from this study suggests there is need for further research. This study lends itself to other grade levels and to different types of advisory programs. Research might consider the level of poverty a student comes from, teacher training with at-risk students, the length of time considered for the study, and the amount of teacher training in advisory programs prior to implementation.
