In the United States, there are over 3 million people that have been affected by the suicide of a loved one, and these individuals are known in the literature as "suicide survivors" (McIntosh, 1996). A new area of focus in the suicide literature is the professional response following a suicide. Law enforcement personnel (Hart & DeBernardo, 2004), coroners (Biddle, 2003), clergy (Rubey & Clark, 1987), and funeral home personnel (Conley, 1987) have all been described in the literature as responding to survivors after a suicide.

The purpose of this research was to gain a better understanding of what suicide survivors experience with service providers in response to the suicide of their loved one. Qualitative methods were used to explore the quality and nature of these interactions from the survivors' perspective.

Prospective participants were recruited through contact with leaders of suicide survivors' support groups, national suicide prevention organizations and Internet-based support and referral sources. Survivors selected for this study experienced the suicide death of an immediate family member in the preceding 60 months, reported contact with several different service providers and represented diverse geographic areas.

Nine survivors (7 women and 2 men) responded to narrative questions and participated in semi-structured, in-depth telephone interviews about their experiences with service providers following the suicide death. Data were analyzed using the grounded theory approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1967), a systematic data analysis that utilizes constant comparative methods between different data sources. Data from a local focus group of eight survivors (5 women and 3 men) were used to member check the findings.

The results were divided into two groups: service providers that responded to the scene of the suicide and other service providers who responded following the suicide. Results indicated that the quality of the interactions between survivors and service providers varied, though there was some agreement among the participants about the roles of each service provider and the nature of the interactions. The results provided an overall picture of the interactions between survivors and professionals in response to suicide. Characteristics of the study and implications for research and practice are also discussed.
