Thesis (D.Sc.)--Washington University, 1992.
General theoretical techniques for analyzing the interfacial stability of multilayer polymeric flows have been developed. These techniques have been utilized to theoretically investigate the effects of viscosity, elasticity, and depth ratios as well as Reynolds number, interfacial tension, and gravitational force on the interfacial stability of multilayer plane Poiseuille and converging channel flows. Overall the results indicate that under certain physical (i.e., viscosity and elasticity ratios) and geometric (i.e., depth ratio) conditions stable regions at all disturbance wavelengths can be obtained. This suggests that based on this study operating diagrams for stable flow of multilayer polymeric fluids in parallel or converging channel dies could be constructed. A brief comparison of theoretical and experimental results has been made. The result of this comparison indicates that the prediction of the theoretical analysis is consistent with experimental results.Subjects--Topical Terms:
