Thesis (Ed.D.)--Columbia University Teachers College, 1999.
This project is concerned with the teaching of the Brazilian Art Song to non-Brazilian singers and voice teachers, taking as examples two song albums by Heitor Villa-Lobos titled Modinhas e Cancoes I and II. These songs contain elements from the national sources of music that characterize the Brazilian nationalistic style, and are appropriate repertoire for the college level singer. This study addresses the lack of available teaching material to facilitate access to the Brazilian Art Song repertoire to the non-Portuguese speaking singer and accompanist pianist who have little or no information about Brazilian cultural background. The Portuguese Language is introduced through phonetic and prosodic differences between the Portuguese from Portugal and the Brazilian Portuguese. Special attention is given to Native Indian and African Languages' contributions and their importance to the characterization of Brazilian Portuguese. Lyric diction for the Brazilian Art Song is discussed based on the norms adopted by the "First Congress of the National Sung Language," realized in Sao Paulo, in 1937. Heitor Villa-Lobos is situated within the context of the Brazilian musical nationalism, his historical importance for the development of Brazilian artistic consciousness, his development as a musician and as a composer and his deep connection with the popular and folkloric roots as well as the vastness of Brazilian nature. An in-depth analysis of all thirteen songs brings out the inherent sociological, historical, linguistic and musical information that will help to understand each song within the context of Brazilian culture. Brazilian national musical sources absorbed by Villa-Lobos are underlined. Poems are translated literally and idiomatically, and are accompanied by their phonetic transcriptions. The score of each song is provided and is analyzed according to its harmonic and stylistic features. Interpretive performance suggestions for both voice and piano are added. Recommendations for further studies comprise other songs by Villa-Lobos and by other important Brazilian composers. A Pronunciation Guide for Brazilian Portuguese, a list of Brazilian terms, and a selected discography of Heitor Villa-Lobos' songs are also provided.
