During her lifetime, Marion Bauer was a respected composer, writer, teacher, and lecturer. At the age of 23, she went to Paris where she earned the distinction of having been Nadia Boulanger's first American student. 520 $a Marion Bauer is considered an American impressionist. Exposed to contemporary French music during her European studies, she continued her musical training in New York and cultivated her interest in contemporary trends. Her songs were influenced by the melodies of Debussy, Ravel, and Duparc and by the music of her American colleague Charles Griffes.
520 $a Bauer's early songs were written with commercial success in mind but rose above the typical salon and semi-popular genres cultivated by many of the song composers of her generation. As she developed her personal style, her taste in poetry became more discriminating and many of her texts show the influence of French symbolism.
520 $a Today, Marion Bauer's compositions are virtually forgotten. The purpose of this work is to provide a resource for those who may wish to examine the vocal repertoire as a source of programming and teaching material. The study includes a biography of the composer. Three chapters are devoted to the early, middle and late songs with analyses of selected songs from each period. An extensive section is devoted to the Four Poems, Opus 16, Bauer's most significant vocal work. The final chapter provides a stylistic summary and a consideration of Bauer's works in historical perspective. Appendices include a chronological listing of Bauer's solo vocal works and an annotated catalogue of the songs for voice and piano.
