Thesis (M.N.)--University of Calgary (Canada), 2005.
The purpose of this study was to explore the beliefs, desires and intentions of older individuals who hoard compulsively. These individuals pose tremendous challenges for healthcare providers regarding the maintenance of safety, hygiene and mobility, and especially during transitions from independent living to assisted living facilities. A focused ethnographic research design was used as the method of exploration. The sample consisted of eight older adults who were currently receiving Home care and who were identified as exhibiting compulsive hoarding behaviours. Strategies for data collection included participant observation, field notes, memos, conversational interviews, physical artifacts, and photography. Data analysis included the identification of themes or patterns within and across participants. Three underlying themes were identified: traits of Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder, traits of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and symptoms of Diogenes Syndrome or Squalor Syndrome. These findings were compared to existing literature and implications for community nursing practice were offered.
