Low socioeconomic (SES) students tend to achieve academically at a much lower level than higher socioeconomic students. However, some low SES students are very successful in school. The purpose of this study is to provide the perspective of low SES academically successful students.

Low socioeconomic (SES) students tend to achieve academically at a much lower level than higher socioeconomic students. However, some low SES students are very successful in school. The purpose of this study is to provide the perspective of low SES academically successful students.

Case study methodology with a phenomenological approach is used as low SES high school students who are academically successful share their experiences of their success. In-depth interviews with three high school students were conducted and recorded. The study was conducted in a suburban school system in Georgia.

The students are considered academically successful by pursuing a college preparatory diploma and having a "B" average. They are low SES because their parents were either high school dropouts or only achieved a high school diploma. Also, the students' parents were either unemployed or worked in low skilled jobs.

The results of this study reveal several common themes in the their students' experiences. They include, (1) Influence of Family; (2) Influence of Teachers; (3) Participation in Extracurricular Activities; (4) Having Goals; (5) Being Religious; and (6) Selection of Certain Friends.

While there has been much research on student achievement, including low SES students, it is suggested that there should be more research conducted on the students' perspective.
