As the relatively high-paying, traditionally unionized blue-collar jobs are being de-industrialized out of existence; more working class people are finding themselves in the service sector whose policies often make it extremely difficult for them to find the time and resources to care for their families. The goal of this study was to better understand how working families are adjusting to recent economic, social and political changes, affecting their lives.

A grounded theory approach was undertaken in order to provide a theoretical framework for a proposed larger study. One focus group and 24 individual interviews were conducted with working class individuals in Michigan and Florida who worked in the manufacturing and service sector industries.

There was surprisingly no identifiable racial or gender differences among these participants' attitudes and beliefs and only subtle differences in attitudes and beliefs between the Michiganians and Floridians. All voiced dissatisfaction with their work environment, and all had difficulties balancing work and family. The majority supported unions. The biggest differences were intergenerational.

The oldest participants had either retired comfortably or who were facing retirement. They were fairly optimistic about their futures, but were less optimistic about the prospects for the younger generations. The youngest participants were apprehensive and unsure about how they would be able to navigate their way through their futures. As the generation who had been promised the "American Dream," and who had seen their parents achieve it, the baby boomers exhibited the most anxieties. They find themselves facing shrinking benefits, downsizing and job loss. Retirement is an uncertainty and education for their children is becoming more and more unaffordable. As a result, these workers are currently disillusioned with the American Dream.

In spite of their pessimistic view toward the future, most still hold on to the possibility that they and their families might still be able to achieve the American Dream. The question they have, however, is: In today's world, how achievable is it?
