The relationship between parental academic monitoring and adolescent academic achievement is clear. Less is known about youth and parent factors associated with parental academic monitoring in a low-income, African American population. Potential factors related to academic monitoring are examined, as well as concordance between adolescent and parent reports of academic monitoring. Parent (n = 66) and youth (n = 111) data are analyzed.

Literature related to parental involvement, monitoring, and parental academic monitoring is reviewed. Youth factors associated with parental academic monitoring are described. Adolescents are classified into two groups; lower and higher perceived academic monitoring, based on mean scale scores. Using logistic regression analysis, perceived parental support (OR = 2.08, p = .003), and friend's pro-social behavior (OR = 1.54, p = .036) were significant predictors of perceived parental academic monitoring. Adolescents living with one biological parent, with other adults were more likely to perceive their parents academic monitoring as higher compared to adolescents living with one biological parent, no other adults (OR = 3.58, p = .05).

Parent factors associated with parental perception of academic monitoring are described. T-tests compared means on factors between parents with lower versus higher parental academic monitoring. Higher parental academic monitoring related to three parent factors; school endorsement (t = 2.18, p = .033), relationships with teachers (t = 3.68, p < 0.001), and general monitoring (t = 6.66, p < 0.001). Parent/youth agreement on academic monitoring was weak (kappa = .182, p = .135). Parents/youth who agreed that academic monitoring was higher were compared to parents/youth agreeing monitoring was lower or disagreeing. There was no significant association with adolescent report of academic achievement; when there was agreement, grade point averages were .06 points higher (95% CI = -.43 to .54), in the anticipated direction.

Results identified factors in a high-risk population that may lead to an understanding of the role of parental academic monitoring in enhancing adolescent academic achievement. Perceptions of general parental support and peer groups offer one explanation of why parental academic monitoring allows some urban youth to succeed academically while others do not. Parental support provides a context that influences youth's perceptions of their parent's academic monitoring. It is important to further define factors related to parental academic monitoring to design successful parent interventions.
