The transmission (teaching and learning) of song, along with dance and instrumental music, among Irish Americans can be found at the Irish Arts Center in New York City. Classes in rince (dance) cover the four types of Irish traditional dance---the social dance types of couple dances and waltzes, celli dance, and set dance, and the solo, exhibitionistic step dance. Classes in ceol (instrumental music) cover bodhran, tin whistle, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, bazouki, and guitar, with a chance to play in one of two house bands. Classes in amhran (song) cover the basic class of Irish Song with a Performance Class or Singers' Circle to follow.

This monograph describes the researcher's experience teaching the Irish Song class and Singer's Circle from the Winter Semester 1995 through the Winter Semester 1998. Over thirty singers, mostly born in Ireland, were located and invited to present either a class or a workshop for IAC students and the community. Transmission was observed as each singer interacted with guest singers and students, The parameters of song along with processes of "passing it on" were recorded. Interviews were held with singers and instrumental musicians. Ethnographic data was arranged in domains, then ordered in a taxonomy, toward an understanding of the processes of teaching and the problems and reactions to learning by students. Information collected was compared throughout with Irish historical and descriptive writings about traditional arts and other streams of music making found in Ireland and the diaspora.

Four narrative voices---those of songs, those of singers, those of song students, and those of the author and other researchers---are interpreted toward capturing meaning and feelingfulness expressed by Irish cosmology. Ambiguity in song text and in transmission process is seen not as an impediment but as an engine for wonder in learning. Fostering wonder becomes a goal for music education.
