The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between static flexibility of the lower extremity, leg stiffness, and velocity at each phase of the 100-m sprint. The participants (N = 85) included male volunteers (22.6 +/- 2.94 years) who exercised a minimum of 2--3 times a week for 30 min. Muscle-tendon unit stiffness and static flexibility of the lower extremity were determined by hopping stiffness and the modified sit-and-reach, respectively, while velocities at the 20-, 40-, 60-, 80-, and 100-m marks were quantified using laser timing lights. An independent t test and a Pearson's r were used to calculate differences between groups and the relationship between all outcome measures, respectively. The track athlete group (n = 14) displayed significantly greater velocities than the non-athlete group ( n = 71) at 40, 60, 80, and 100 m (p < 0.001). No relationship was displayed between any variables within the track athlete group. Static flexibility of the lower extremity displayed positive relationships with velocity at all phases of the 100-m sprint in the non-athlete group ( p < 0.05).
