Thesis (M.Sc.)--Universite Laval (Canada), 1999.
The goal of the present thesis was to assess the acute and chronic effects of different modes of activity on human skeletal muscle. In the first study, the changes in glycogen content and isometric strength were monitored during high-frequency neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The results demonstrated that significant decreases in glycogen content of all muscle fibre types and isometric strength are observable after only 15 contractions. During a second study, changes in maximal oxygen consumption, power output and skeletal muscle characteristics were assessed following 14 weeks of complex resistance training. The results favourably support the use of such a program of resistance training with endurance athletes.
