Little research to date has delved into the experiential and philosophical inquiry of the cultivation of qi-dancing. This dissertation presents the first major philosophical study on the topic of qi -dancing, by incorporating the Daoist idea of self-cultivation as it pertains to dance performance in contemporary times. This is captured by the title "Spirit-Dancing Through Qi-Body" which reflects the themes of the dissertation---embodiment and transformation. It thematically investigates the phenomena of qi-energy that appear in dancing, i.e., qi-dancing, in order to articulate the transformative process of its embodiment.

To articulate this lived sense of embodiment, this dissertation focuses on developing a conceptual model of qi-body by incorporating the practical qigong theory embedded in The Zhuang-zi˘. Concretely, this is analyzed in terms of the three stages of transformation: first, refining sexual energy ( jing), transforming jing into psychophysical energy (qi), and then refining qi, transforming it into divine subtle energy (shen). This dissertation also performs a comparative study connecting this analysis of the qi-body scheme to Merleau-Ponty's theory of the lived body. A transformative paradigm of qi-dancing is developed for the purpose of showing how and why this paradigm can help dancers go beyond the everyday psycho-physiological dimension. Moreover, this comparative study aims to demonstrate that through the training and cultivation of psycho-physical energy, the dancer's qi-body ultimately becomes capable of experiencing spirit-dancing as the body is cultivated to embody the spirit (shen).

This dissertation concludes that the embodiment of spirit-dancing, i.e., dancing in tune with divine subtle energy, requires more than technical practice of any dance art. Its contribution lies in providing an alternative conceptual model to contemporary dance education. The dominant modes of dance training have been influenced by theories that singularly focus on the physical aspects of dance with an assumption that the mind regulates and controls the body. Instead, this dissertation demonstrates that the paradigm of qi -dancing can help dancers to express the true beauty of performing techniques with the embodiment of spirit-dancing, by predicating this attainment on the achieved state of the union of human and heaven, the highest goal of art recognized since antiquity in China.
