This study critically examines technological nationalism in Indonesia. It focuses on the Indonesian Aircraft Industry (IPTN), which was economically, politically, and ideologically nurtured by the New Order regime (1966--1998). Four major questions are raised in this study: How has nationalism been an impetus for technological development? What are the structural conditions that give rise to technological nationalism? How has nationalism been expressed in the form and operation of technological artifacts? And what social, cultural, and political consequences does technological nationalism have for society? Two central objectives are pursued: (1) to produce an account of one important piece of the history of modernity in Indonesia, an episode that encompasses the idea of nationalism and high technology, and (2) to develop a theoretical explanation of how nationalism becomes an impetus for the development of high technology and to reveal the social, cultural, and political implications that nationalism has brought to society in the pursuit of high technology. By analyzing the phenomenon of technological nationalism, this study seeks to contribute to STS scholarship. It also presents a narrative of postcolonial modernity that will enrich literature in Southeast Asian studies. This study relies on data and information gathered through two periods of fieldwork in Jakarta and Bandung. Two methods were used: (a) in-depth interviews with policymakers, IPTN engineers, Muslim leaders, academicians, and environmental activists, and (b) archival studies method to trace nationalist rhetoric in policy texts, technical documents, and mass media reports. Accordingly, this study employs discourse analysis to unpack cultural assumptions of high technology development, and to unfold power effects of the rhetoric of technological nationalism.
