The purpose of this study was to identify nurses' reasons for participation as evaluators in the accreditation process of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). A survey research design was employed, utilizing a mail questionnaire to elicit quantitative data on the reasons for participation. The survey instrument consisted of two parts: Part I was a slightly modified version of the Participation Reasons Scale (PRS) (Grotelueschen, 1985) used with permission to assess evaluators' reasons for participation in nursing accreditation; Part II was a Respondent Information Form used to elicit demographic and professional information about study participants. The study population included 512 evaluators who participated on at least one CCNE on-site evaluation from Fall 1998 to Spring 2003. A total of 434 questionnaires were returned, yielding an 84.8% response rate.

Factor analysis of responses to the PRS indicated that the following six factors underlie the nurses' reasons for participation as accreditation evaluators: Service to Patients, Professional Commitment, Professional Development and Collegial Interaction, Professional Competence and Improvement, Personal Benefits and Job Security, and Professional Identity. Mean scores on each factor were computed (7 = highest possible score) and ranged from 2.68 (Personal Benefits and Job Security) to 5.93 (Professional Development and Collegial Interaction). Thus, the nurse evaluators in this study were most highly motivated by participation reasons associated with professional development and collegial interaction.

Analysis of variance and independent sample t test procedures were used to determine the relationship between participation factor scores and demographic and professional characteristics. Post-hoc comparisons were accomplished using the Scheffe method. Significant differences were found for Service to Patients and for Personal Benefits and Job Security, based on evaluators' team role, age, and years in the nursing profession. When respondents were grouped by advanced practice certification, professional role, and highest degree, significant differences were found for Service to Patients and for Professional Competence and Improvement.

Study findings suggest that, for this nurse population, certain demographic and professional characteristics influence professionals' reasons for participation as accreditation evaluators. On the basis of these findings, accreditation professionals should consider the multiple motivational reasons in evaluator recruitment and training programs.
