Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2005.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, although created to close the achievement gaps and improve student academic achievement levels, seems to present many barriers for rural schools in achieving these goals. This position paper explains the importance of maintaining small rural schools in order to increase rural students' academic achievement levels and properly prepare them for higher education. Linkages among higher education institutions, federal, state, and local education agencies, as well as, teachers, students, and parents are included as major factors affecting rural school education. The accountability standards of NCLB are discussed throughout as creating barriers from both financial and academic aspects. Rural school support sources, from both financial and political aspects are discussed with strategies being offered to meet NCLB standards, increase academic achievement levels, and sustain the existence of small rural schools.
