Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fuller Theological Seminary, School of Intercultural Studies, 2005.

This thesis describes the historical origin of string tying ritual as practiced among the Isaan people of northeast Thailand and its cultural significance for them today. It presents a review of the biblical, theological, and cultural perspectives on ritual in general and compares this to the use of string tying ritual within the community of followers of Christ in the Isaan region of Thailand. The final section presents interview and survey data among Isaan believers as to reasons why the ritual is or is not used in their particular fellowships, and concludes with a missiological interpretation of the impact of worldview perspectives upon communication of the gospel using local cultural forms such as string tying ritual.
