Thesis (Ph.D.)--New School University, 2005.
The object of this dissertation is to retrieve the experiences of a particular cohort of graduate students and how these scholars challenged the prevalent paradigm in mid-twentieth century American anthropology. It tells a story of a group of scholars, the Mundial Upheaval Society, whose members had similar histories, knowledge, and concerns, and yet at the at the same time were significantly diverse in experience and perspective. As a group and as individuals, they deliberately confronted conventional anthropological ideas. They sought to transcend the anthropological concentration on pre-contact primitive life as reconstructed by anthropologists working in the Boasian tradition. It was a self-conscious effort to refocus anthropology toward materialism and causation---away from cultural plasticity and the relativism of salvage ethnography.

This dissertation looks at how these scholars advocated in their intellectual development what might be termed critical materialism---a politically engaged historical materialist approach. Drawing from archival collections, Freedom of Information Act documents, interviews, as well as secondary sources, this dissertation traces the development of their anthropological ideas and perspectives in relation to personal, political concerns, national and international politics, as well as within the context of the Cold War. It examines their lives to understand their theory, but also looks at their theory to understand their lives, making this study part life history, part intellectual biography, part disciplinary ethnography.
