In this study a Markov chain model of Great Basin sagebrush steppe vegetation dynamics is developed and used to predict vegetation change through time under different management scenarios and to examine the economic and ecological benefits of post-fire revegetation in the Great Basin. The Markov chain model demonstrates that revegetation with a native seed mix and revegetation with crested wheatgrass differed in cost and efficacy for achieving the proposed management goals. However, post-fire revegetation with either seed mix was more effective than no revegetation for achieving each ecosystem objective. Further, a strategy of post-fire revegetation with either seed mix costs less than implementing no revegetation due to reduction in future fire suppression costs. Consequently, post-fire revegetation makes both ecological and economic sense in the context of the proposed management goals, while the choice of seed mix should depend on the prioritization of management objectives.
