This phenomenological study examined the experiences of older adults who have a sibling affected with a serious mental disorder. A total of 14 Caucasian adult siblings over the age of 45 years old were interviewed 3 times over the course of 18 months. This sample represented an older age group of adult siblings than has been reflected in the literature. Audiotaped interviews were transcribed and analyzed for recurrent themes using van Manen's method of data analysis. The themes that emerged were: The Roller Coaster Ride, Coping with the Ride, Looking Ahead and Needed Resources. The Roller Coaster Ride provided a description of their experiences which was influenced by the stability of the affected sibling's (AS) mental disorder. Identified sibling stressors include working through their feelings, dealing with the mental health system and the demands associated with caregiving, and dealing with the stigma associated with mental disorders. Coping with the ride involved relying on spirituality, seeking knowledge, accepting the disorder, managing behavior, shielding self, and having the support from others. Becoming educated about mental disorders and acquiring coping skills have helped in coping with the ride. As siblings looked ahead to the future, they perceived a bleak future for their ASs and most thought they would stay involved to some extent in their ASs' lives. A few siblings were already assuming more caregiving responsibilities to relieve parents of that responsibility. Specific treatment and support services were identified as needed resources for the AS and family members. Recommendations for nursing practice, nursing education, health policy and further research were discussed.
