Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University, 2000.
This dissertation investigates the connection between Mendelssohn's theory of language and his radical portrayal of Judaism as a rational religion. Mendelssohn's theory finds language and his radical portrayal of Judaism as a rational religion. Mendelssohn's theory finds its climax in his unique definition of Judaism as a ritual based, rationally centered, "ceremonial script." The correspondence between Mendelssohn's ideas of language and reason, detailed in his language theory, provide the foundation for a new analysis of Mendelssohn's use of language to legitimate Judaism's claim to particularity.

This dissertation investigates the connection between Mendelssohn's theory of language and his radical portrayal of Judaism as a rational religion. The project proceeds by examining Mendelssohn's writings on language, providing background and contextual information so as to frame the development of his theory. It then analyzes his understanding of literature as a language art, devoting specific attention to Mendelssohn's aesthetic principles insofar as they display the flexibility of literature to describe, portray, and represent the sophistication of language. This maturity is especially evident in Mendelssohn's analysis of the beautiful and the sublime. The final part of this study focuses on the application of Mendelssohn's language theory to Judaism, and the presentation of ceremonial law as a form of "living script," a script that participates in the relationship between language and reason. It is through this intimate relationship that Mendelssohn is able to frame and legitimate Judaism as a revealed religion with a rationalist twist, an impossibility that led many of Mendelssohn's contemporaries and successors to view him as a deist in Jew's clothing.
