Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, San Diego, 1994.
This dissertation discusses the development of film censorship in China during the Republican period, with a focus on the Nanjing decade (1927-1937). From the first government regulation on film in 1911 to the establishment of the National Film Censorship Committee in 1931, government control over this new medium evolved into a highly sophisticated system. By looking at the role film censorship played in state- building in China during the decades before the war with Japan, this dissertation touches on issues ranging from the Nationalist government' s cultural policy to its relationship with the cultural industry, from factionalism within the Nanjing government to the film censors' handling of leftist films, from the agressive "cultural invasion" from Hollywood to Chinese official and popular nationalism.Subjects--Topical Terms:
