The purpose of this study was to examine parenting differences between African American and Caucasian mothers, determine the parenting style that best predicted the lowest incidence of externalizing behaviors for African American and Caucasian children, and to determine the relationship between socioeconomic status and externalizing behaviors of children. The study required African American and Caucasian mothers of 1st and 2 nd grade children to complete self-report measures of parenting style and a demographic survey. Teachers rated children of participating mothers on the incidence of externalizing behaviors in the classroom (hyperactivity, aggression, and conduct problems) using the Behavior Assessment System for Children - 2nd edition (BASC-2). This study gathered data from 71 mothers (24 African American and 47 Caucasian) between the ages of 20 and 50, from households with total incomes ranging from

00,000. Data revealed no significant differences among ethnicity and overall preferred parenting style of mothers, as all mother participants viewed themselves as mostly or exclusively Authoritative parents. However, African American mothers tended to be more permissive than Caucasian mothers. No significant differences were found among behaviors of African American and Caucasian children. Significant differences (p < .01, .05) were found between parenting style and incidence of negative externalizing behaviors, as well as with parenting style and total household income. Mothers from higher income households tended to be less physically coercive, less non-reasoning and/or punitive, and less permissive. In addition, children from higher household incomes tended to be less hyperactive and, overall, display fewer externalizing behaviors. Relationships were also found among specific parenting strategies and externalizing behaviors (p < .01, .05). Children of mothers who consistently and almost exclusively used Authoritative parenting strategies were rated as less aggressive and displayed fewer conduct problems. Authoritative parenting strategies that fell under the Autonomy Granting and Regulation Dimensions were optimal with regards to lower aggression and conduct problems in children, with Autonomy Granting strategies having the most global effect on behaviors.
