This study examined the role perception of school library media specialist as perceived by four groups of educators. The educators of a large metropolitan public school system and public and private institutions of higher learning were surveyed using the Role Expectations of Library Media Specialists (RELMS) instrument.('1)

The instrument demonstrated reliability. The clustering of the survey items produced five factors which were used as dependent variables in analyses of variance: (a) Technological Media Role, (b) Interpersonal Relations Role, (c) Leadership Role, (d) Instruc- tional Role, and (e) Clerical Role. One-way analyses of variance were used to determine the differences among the four educator groups, five teaching levels, and five degree levels on each of the dependent variables.

The analysis showed thirty-five out of forty-six survey items, 76 percent, did not reveal a mean difference great enough, among the educator groups, to be considered significant. The participants concurred on a majority of the role perception indicators. The exceptions were for the factors of the Interpersonal Relations Role and the Instructional Role. In both these factors, the perception of the classroom teachers was significantly different from the other three groups. The strongest variable, the Technological Media Role, clearly indicated the participants in the study no longer perceive the role in obsolete, traditional terms but in the newer, emerging role.

Other findings indicate that (a) contrary to the principals and classroom teachers, the school library media specialist perceives her responsibility to be the selection of all materials for the school library media center, assistance from the district media center in implementing the library media program in the school is available, and her role should be assertive and dynamic; (b) contrary to the school library media specialists and classroom teachers, the prin- cipals perceive that the school library media specialist is personally responsible for recording video and audio programs; (c) contrary to the other three groups, the library media educators perceived developing district and regional networks to be the responsibility of the school library media specialist as well as circulating all materials

from the library media center. The higher the academic degree, the greater the absence of variance concerning the role perception.
