My Project Demonstrating Excellence (PDE), Kickin' Up Dust, is a conceptualization of the Sankofa: an Adinkra symbol from Ghana, West Africa, which means "Go back to fetch it", symbolizing the wisdom of learning from the past. That is the intention of this work---to recall triumphs over situations and circumstances that the Black community faced from the time of captivity to the present day. These challenges and the "ways of being" that have kept African Americans surviving and thriving are important historical data frequently absent from discussions of the Black past.

520 $a Gospel music has an important place in the history of African American sacred music traditions and this is reflected throughout my PDE, the musical play Kickin' Up Dust. An understanding of Black women and their integral role in the evolution of gospel music is the foundation of the play. As an offspring of the spiritual, gospel music signaled the emergence of a distinct voice emanating from the blending of rural and urban centers developed during the Great Migration when large numbers of African Americans left the South for a better life in Northern United States. Chicago was one of the "landings" for Black people and became a center of religious, artistic, and political activity. Gospel choirs, composers, writers, and publishers were there, and a flowering took place.
520 $a The musical play incorporates performance, improvisation, drama, and songwriting with stories, narratives, and historical events that portray cultural memories in the Black community through women's voices.
520 $a My contextual essay researched the development of gospel music through the lens of Black women's lives and their involvement in its development and popularization. I compiled a list of questions for African American, Christian women, aged 50--82 concerning their recollections of faith and resilience, and weaved their stories into the dialogues of my musical play, Kickin' Up Dust.
