Thesis (Ph.D.)--California School of Professional Psychology - Los Angeles, 1994.
The purpose of this study was to investigate empirically, in a normal population, the relationship between eight basic personality styles from the typology developed by Theodore Millon and the cognitive style of field dependence-independence which has been the research focus of Herman Witkin and his colleagues. Strack's Personality Adjective Check List (PACL) was used to measure Millon's personality styles, and Witkin's Embedded Figures Test (EFT) was used to measure field dependence-independence. The two tests were individually administered to a sample of 84 Los Angeles area community college student volunteers (51 women and 33 men). The sample was ethnically diverse and included varying levels of acculturation to the culture of the United States.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Relationships between EFT scores and PACL scale scores were explored statistically through correlational and regression analyses. Significant relationships were found between EFT scores and four of the PACL scales corresponding to the Millon Schizoid, Dependent, Narcissistic, and Antisocial personality styles. Of particular note is the finding that the Millon Antisocial style appears to be associated with field dependence rather than field independence as was hypothesized on the basis of Millon's and Witkin's theories. The results suggest that the interpersonal autonomy which is characteristic of field independence is associated with the detached interpersonal pattern (Schizoid and Avoidant personality styles) of Millon's typology rather than the independent interpersonal pattern (Narcissistic and Antisocial personality styles).

Additional analyses yielded significant findings of a difference in EFT scores between women and men, a relationship between EFT scores and age of subjects, and a significant relationship between EFT scores and subjects' acculturation levels. The last finding is of interest as it confirms other research indicating a cultural influence on the perceptual/cognitive ability of field dependence-independence.
