This study examines the effects that the forces of the literary market---marketing, promotion, and advertising---have on the production of literature. I consider the way the female erotic body is appropriated by women authors as a promotional narrative technique that undermines its own market representation. The Introduction provides an overview of the history of the literary market since the 1970s and of the forces that determine the writing and dissemination of literature today. I locate contemporary literature within the paradigm proposed by Pierre Bourdieu in The Field of Cultural Production to demonstrate how the existence and success of an author's work depends on the institutions that give it value. "Feminine literature" in particular is rethought in relation to Bourdieu's sociological framework. This part of the study is supplemented with authors' comments to emphasize the forces that female writers have to contend with in the market place.

An advertisement that introduces each chapter highlights the promotional features of each novel's narrative strategy. Straddling the fields of marketing and visual culture, this study proposes to disclose the female erotic body's power of promotion inside and outside the text. What stands out in all five of the works analyzed-Paloma Diaz-Mas's El sueno de Venecia, Lourdes Ortiz's Urraca, Cristina Peri Rossi's Solitario de amor, Esther Tusquets's El amor es un juego solitario, and Almudena Grandes's Las edades de Lulu ---are the techniques used to increase the readers' viewing pleasure: decontextualization, cutting and pasting, objectification, and multiple focalization. The narrative in each case includes an entire system of promotional means that resides beyond its histoire. The interpretation of these novels through the visual culture that promotes them reveals the parallel forces that surround their production and the readers' position in the reception of the works. The novels incite the readers' awareness of the role of the female body (as author and as character) in the process of creating meaning.
