The review of literature and related research disclosed survey research methods have been used extensively by industrial technology professionals and doctoral students to investigate curricular themes. A number of studies were conducted to identify the nature of management courses and to describe curricular changes and trends. No research was identified that specially examines the nature of industrial technology management curricula or attempts to discern differences in management curricula between accredited and non accredited programs.

A self-developed research instrument was used in the study. A total of 94 survey instruments were mailed to industrial technology program representatives, of which 85 (90%) were ultimately returned. The study population consisted of 45 accredited and 40 non accredited industrial technology programs. Data were analyzed using conventional descriptive and inferential statistical methods to describe the nature of industrial technology programs and to report perceptions of industrial technology program representatives.

The study reported herein was an effort to analyze and describe baccalaureate degree industrial technology programs and the perceptions of industrial technology department representatives. Perceptions of respondents reflect a uniformity regarding program focus and a confidence in the quality of graduates, while also showing awareness of a need to revise the industrial technology management curricula. Little difference between accredited and non accredited programs is perceived; demographic data show little actual difference between accredited and non accredited programs. Favorable attitudes toward the NAIT accreditation process and requirements are evident, as is a recognition that the NAIT Accreditation Handbook needs to be supplemented. Proposed, new management foundation requirements by the author are generally endorsed. Finally, there is considerable evidence that a majority of industrial technology programs are providing instruction regarding state-of-the-art management topics and principles.
