The present descriptive correlation study was designed to investigate the relationships of fatigue and hope to psychosocial adjustment to breast cancer in Korean women receiving post-surgical follow-up treatment. The framework for this study was guided by concepts and propositions derived from the theoretical and empirical literature on stress, hope, and adjustment to illness. Using this framework, the researcher proposed linkages of fatigue and hope to psychosocial adjustment to breast cancer.

The sample consisted of 122 women receiving chemotherapy or radiation therapy for early breast cancer. Three self-report measures with established reliability and validity and a demographic information form were given at seven to eight weeks after surgery. The self-report measures included the Piper Fatigue scale, the Herth Hope Index, and the Psychosocial Adjustment to Illness Scale. The questionnaires were completed at home and returned in a self-addressed stamped envelope. The obtained data were analyzed using hierarchical multiple regression equations.

The results indicated that after controlling for hope, fatigue uniquely accounted for 38% of the variance in psychosocial adjustment. After controlling for fatigue, hope uniquely accounted for 7% of the variance in psychosocial adjustment. There was no significant interaction between fatigue and hope in accounting for the variance in psychosocial adjustment. However, a significant mediating effect was found. Hope functions as a mediator between fatigue and psychosocial adjustment. The findings suggest that fatigue and hope need to be taken into consideration when planning care for psychosocial adjustment in women receiving radiation therapy or chemotherapy for breast cancer.
