Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Florida State University, 2005.
This research discussed in this dissertation is comprised of three distinct projects. The first is the fabrication of carbon-silica nanocomposites from the pyrolysis of acrylonitrile in a porous Vycor RTM glass to form dispersed carbon nanocrystals. The second is the use of electric field oriented hydrogels as templates to form hierarchically structured, micro/mesoporous silica materials. Finally, the chemical and physical properties of nanocomposites comprised of an iron (III) oxide gel and nanoscale (50--100 nm) aluminum have been investigated. While these three topics appear disparate, they are bound together a common theme; they are all materials whose properties are both defined and dictated by their nanoscale dimensions of the constituents. In all cases they have physical or chemical properties that differ from similar materials with either more micro- or macroscopic dimensions.
