Most of the literature on job mobility and wage growth focuses on factors that are either general or firm-specific. In this dissertation, I study the implications of considering factors that are specific to the type of job of a worker.

Most of the literature on job mobility and wage growth focuses on factors that are either general or firm-specific. In this dissertation, I study the implications of considering factors that are specific to the type of job of a worker.

In the first part of my thesis, I concentrate on the job mobility patterns that arise when we consider the career choice of workers. I present a model that allows for the presence of time varying career-specific and firm-specific matches. I estimate the structural parameters of the model using Efficient Method of Moments. Simulating the data using the estimates of the structural model, I am able to reproduce reasonably well the empirical facts that motivate the paper. I also show that similar models with only firm-specific matches or only career-specific matches cannot replicate the observed patterns of job mobility. Estimates show that welfare losses at the time of displacement implied by the model are 30% smaller than in a model with only firm specific matches.

In the last part of my thesis, I turn my attention to wage the growth implications of career choice. I develop and estimate a search model in which career-specific and firm-specific matches determine job mobility and wage growth. Each worker-firm and worker-career relationship is characterized by a match that evolves stochastically over time. At each period, a worker has three options. He can: (1) stay at his current firm, (2) draw a new firm-specific match by changing employer or (3) change career by drawing a new career and firm-specific match. Consider a worker who works in the same career for the same employer over a period of ten years. I calculate that his wage will grow on average by 25% because of the accumulation of knowledge and skills that are specific to his career and by 8% because of the accumulation of knowledge and skills that are specific to his employer.
