This research is a comparative study of the biblical and Confucian marital relationship. The overall purpose of the study, which integrates hermeneutical study of key passages in the Bible and in the Confucian classics, is to derive from it elenctic implications for the sake of evangelizing the Chinese who are influenced by Confucianism. To accomplish this, the researcher first explores the true meaning of a marital relationship in the Bible and seeks a true knowledge of the Confucian understanding of a marital relationship from the Confucian classics. A comparison of their teachings lays solid ground work for developing an elenctic approach to evangelism.

The research finds two similarities between biblical and Confucian teachings concerning the marital relationship: the oneness of husband and wife and the submission of women. Both the Bible and the Confucian classics advocate the unity of husband and wife. However, the language of each contains different connotations. The biblical "one body" language reveals the unity of man and woman as God's ordained reality. The Confucian oneness of husband and wife is only an ideal. It embraces a hierarchical connotation, which results in sacrifice of the woman's personality and dignity. The biblical account of creation, however, teaches that men and women are equally image bearers of God and therefore are equal in dignity and value.

The second similarity between biblical and Confucian teachings on the marital relationship is the submission of wives to their husbands. Both the Bible and the Confucian classics teach that women ought to obey their husbands. The difference between the two is the basis for the wives' submission. The Bible teaches that submission to the Lord is the source of the wife's willingness to submit to her husband. The Confucian admonition for wives to obey their husbands leaves an ambiguity without a personal transcendental God as the origin.

In spite of the two similarities, however, there is a difference between the biblical and Confucian teachings on the marital relationship. That is the equality of man and woman in essence and dignity in the Bible and the man-woman inequality in the Confucian classics. This distinction is foundational and results in different perspectives on the total marital relationship.
