Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York Empire State College, 2005.
Mentally retarded/developmentally disabled (MRDD) adolescents and adults increasingly are enjoying the same rights as other individuals. However, MRDD individuals still face many barriers in expressing their sexuality and accessing sexuality information. Barriers to sexuality information determined in the present review include lack of trained instructors; lack of comprehensive curricula, which includes information on birth control, sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS; lack of adequate staff training and policy to address the sexual rights of MRDD individuals; and lack of advocacy and standards on the local, regional and national level to address the discrepancies in sexuality rights. Strategies to remove these barriers include more thorough training of teachers on sex education for MRDD students, more training for agency staff on sexuality issues, creating comprehensive material tailored to the learning styles of MRDD individuals, creating regional advocacy and resource groups, and greater involvement in securing the sexual rights of MRDD individuals by state and federal agencies.
