The purpose of this study was to examine whether regularly participating in physical activity had an influence on academic performance among incoming freshmen students at Delta State University in the Fall, 2004 semester. During the Fall, 2004 and Spring, 2005 semesters, the physical activity levels of incoming freshmen students were assessed along with student academic performance and retention rate. Other factors analyzed were gender, age, collegiate athletic participation, ethnicity, and residency.

The researcher attended each of three orientation sessions and introduced the Physical Activity Survey (PAS) and the consent form to the three groups of participants. For participants who were not present at a summer orientation session, the researcher distributed surveys to the remaining participants via campus mail. A total of 374 participants completed a personally delivered survey utilizing physical activity participation levels. The research design was a descriptive study comparing physical activity habits, academic achievement variables, and participant demographics.

Using an Independent t-test, physical activity levels from the PAS were compared to measure the Fall, 2004 grade point average GPA for incoming freshmen students. Also, an Independent t-test was utilized to measure the comparison of Spring, 2005 retention rate and Fall, 2004 GPA. Using a Two-Dimensional Chi-Square Test, physical activity levels were compared to gender to determine a difference in male and female physical activity participation levels; physical activity levels were compared to retention to determine a difference in retained and non-retained participants' physical activity participation levels; physical activity levels were compared to ethnicity to determine a difference in African-American and Caucasian participants' physical activity participation levels; physical activity levels were compared to age to determine a difference in 18 or younger and 19 or older participants' physical activity participation levels; physical activity levels were compared to collegiate athletic participation to determine a difference in non-athletes' and athletes' physical activity participation levels; and physical activity levels were compared to residency to determine a difference in in-state and out-of-state participants' physical activity participation levels.

A comparison of mean differences of physically active students and non-physically active students indicated that physically active students did show a statistically significant gain in academic performance and retention. The research findings indicated that physical activity levels of males and females did not show a statistically significant gain. The research findings indicated that physical activity levels of retained and nonretained participants did show a statistically significant gain. The research findings indicated that physical activity levels of African-American and Caucasian participants did show a statistically significant gain. The research findings indicated that physical activity levels of participants 18 or younger and 19 or older participants did show a statistically significant gain. The research findings indicated that physical activity levels of non-athletes and athletes did show a statistically significant gain. The findings of the study showed that physical activity levels of Mississippi and out-of-state residents did show a statistically significant gain. Hypotheses were tested at the 0.01 level of significance. Differences were found to exist among the participants, in seven of eight tests administered.
