Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a serious public health problem in New Mexico, yet data on IPV against women in our State are extremely limited. The first aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine prevalence of past-year physical IPV among New Mexican women. The second aim of this study was to assess demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, and social correlates, and multivariate models of past-year physical IPV among White, Hispanic, and Native American women.

Participants were women having a live birth in New Mexico from July 1997 through December 1999, who returned the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey, conducted by the New Mexico Department of Health. The self-administered survey was completed by 1,253 White, 1,555 Hispanic, and 1,036 Native American women (70% response rate). Past-year physical IPV was measured using a single question, which included pushing, hitting, slapping, kicking, or any other way of physically hurting someone physical acts, and the relationship of the perpetrator to the respondent. Analysis of survey data was completed utilizing STATA 8.2 to account for sample design, non-coverage, and non-response.

The prevalence of past-year physical IPV among Native American women (14.6%) was twice the rate among Hispanic (7.5%) and White (6.3%) women. The prevalence of IPV was slightly higher for U.S. born Hispanic (8.0%) compared with Mexico born Hispanic (6.2%) women. Social stressors, socioeconomic status, marital status, and alcohol were consistently associated with past-year IPV among all study women, regardless of race or ethnicity. Multivariate modeling of IPV revealed interaction effects between marital status and aid as a source of income among White women, and between chronic/relationship stressors and alcohol use frequency for Hispanic women. A robust, main effects only model of IPV among Native American women was also estimated.

The women in the current study reported rates of past-year physical IPV similar to those reported elsewhere. Additionally, even within this diverse sample, there was strong evidence of similarity in IPV correlates. Further research should determine prevalence of IPV against women from diverse backgrounds, and examine the pathways through which women may decrease their IPV risk.
