This study compared undergraduate student behaviors regarding six dimensions of wellness as related to grade point average. The dimensions of student wellness investigated were: Emotional, Social, Physical, Intellectual, Occupational, and Spiritual. In addition, this study examined how undergraduates differ in their behaviors related to six wellness dimensions as modified by gender, ethnicity, year in college, and student residency. The College Edition TestWell Survey was the assessment tool used, which is based on the six-dimensional model of wellness as conceived by Dr. William Hettler. A factor analysis of the 50-item TestWell College Edition Survey was employed to further verify that the items assigned to each dimension measured the construct to which each item had been assigned. The factor analysis yielded a six-factor solution. These factors were renamed and were referred to throughout the data analysis as Emotional Management, Social Tolerance, Personal Responsibility, Physical Fitness, Intellectual Commitment, and Self Care.

The study revealed that there were significant statistical relationships between undergraduate student behaviors towards six wellness behaviors and Grade Point Average. As wellness behaviors increased, on two of the six dimensions of wellness (Emotional Management and Self Care), so did the Grade Point Average of undergraduate students. Although no statistical significance was found for Personal Responsibility and Physical Fitness behaviors relating to Grade Point Average, the data indicated that as behaviors increased in these two dimensions so did their Grade Point Average. This study further reinforces that wellness programs are an integral part of the mission of higher education.

Based upon this study, recommendations were made for student affairs administrators to provide wellness opportunities on their campuses. They included developing and implementing programs to encourage students to change their wellness behaviors and to enhance the learning environment on campus. Higher education needs to do a better job of implementing wellness related information into curriculum, orientation, and activity programming. Emphasis must focus on involving all student affairs areas in a partnership for implementing wellness programs. Recommendations for further study included determining if the wellness behaviors identified in this study are applicable to undergraduate students attending colleges and universities in other regions of the United States.

Further study and development of the TestWell College Edition Survey used in this study is desirable. Student affairs professionals are encouraged to organize wellness research efforts to ensure that wellness development meets the unique needs of each campus. It is important to determine whether the impact of college wellness programs on changing student behaviors during the college years will carry over into adulthood.
