Thesis (Ph.D.)--Mississippi State University, 2005.
Prior research on family structure, parental expectations, parental support, and children's outcomes suffers from several major shortcomings. First, many of the previous studies on children's behavioral problems show empirical inconsistencies. Second, prior research often relies on small purposive samples and very few are based on longitudinal data. Third, though prior studies examined the particular effects of parental expectations and/or parental support on children's outcomes, very few have synthesized the combined effects of parental expectations and/or support on children's behavioral problems by comparing them across different types of families. To address these research gaps, this study explores three important research topics. First, this study provides a comprehensive description of the effects of family structure on children's behavior. Second, this study investigates the impact of parental expectations and/or support in addition to different types of families on children's behavioral outcomes. Third, it also investigates children's behavioral problems by comparing different types of families. The overall goal of this study is to validate and extend the ecological theory, a complex system of interdependent relationships of individuals and their social environment, to understand children's behavioral problems by incorporating family structure, parental expectations, and parental support into a more comprehensive theoretical model.

Quantitative data for this study drew on both Waves of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH-1, 1987--1988 and NSFH-2, 1992--1994), a longitudinal survey. After deleting data by using a listwise procedure, OLS regression analyses were performed.

The findings derived from this study show evidence that children of intact families have fewer behavioral problems than children of single-parent families. After controlling for parental expectations and support, these findings persist. Moreover, the relationships between parental expectations and support and children's outcomes differ significantly across three types of families. Results indicate that high levels of parental expectations and support can generally reduce children's various behavioral problems. Though these results do not systematically support the hypotheses, they do show that the ecological approach can indeed help us better understand children's developmental outcomes.
