Many programs of nursing education are beginning to employ high fidelity simulation, taking advantage of advances in technology to develop cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills in a low-risk environment. Multiple factors, including a national nursing shortage, demographic changes in student enrollment, uneven patient care practica experiences, and a healthcare system that forces graduates to take on increasingly complex care management roles, require nursing education to be even more effective in developing students' critical thinking and clinical judgment skills.

This mixed methods study explores the potential of high fidelity simulation in the development of clinical judgment in nursing students. Four dimensions---confidence, aptitude, skill, and experience---as well as the interaction between them, form the basis for the exploration. The study's findings indicate that high fidelity simulation offers an effective educational strategy for nursing education that supports the development of clinical judgment. In addition to these findings, a model of clinical judgment development, a quantitative survey evaluating students' confidence in their clinical judgment, and a rubric providing standards and assessment guidelines resulted from the study.
