Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2005.
This project presents a phenomenological study of the decision-making processes related to the use of predictive genetic testing (PGT) for Huntington's Disease (HD) and Familial Breast Cancer (FBC), two autosomal dominant disorders. In particular, this project examines (a) motivational factors for/against the use of PGT, (b) factors that may influence the assignment of meaning to test results, and (c) the influence of the family system upon the decision-making process of the primary test candidate. Understanding the psychological effects of PGT is especially important as its availability rapidly expands into the realm of primary health care. This is an area of exploration well-suited to health psychology, and this project seeks to contribute to this young field of research by examining the experience of 4 families actively considering the use of PGT.
