Thesis (M.A.)--Miami University, 1998.
The works of Miguel Angel Asturias (Guatemala 1899-1974) describe Guatemala as a blend of two worlds: the European world and the indigenous one. This thesis examines the basic elements of some of his early works. Two topics that will be considered are fertility and the Great Mother. The function of myth in Hombres de maiz (1949), Leyendas de Guatemala (1930) and El Senor Presidente (1946), will be examined, using the theories of Todorov and Eliade. Surrealism and how Asturias understands western and non-western realities as well as dreams and the subconscious will also be considered. Lastly, this thesis looks at Asturias' brand of neoindigenismo. Nineteenth century indianismo, twentieth century indigenismo, and Asturias' neoindigenismo will be compared and contrasted.
