This study examined the representation of African American children in the U.S. child welfare system from the early 1900s to the present. The study investigated the historical development of explanatory factors that affected African American children and their families in the child welfare system and in the social welfare state. Furthermore, the study highlighted the diverse social, environmental, and political experiences of African Americans throughout the 20th Century. The study analyzed the policies and practices that affected the delivery of services to African American children and their families both within the child welfare system and in society as a whole. Implications for social work practice, policy, and research were also discussed.
