Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2005.
The thesis analyzes British newspaper coverage of the American Civil War, centering on London-based publications, especially the London Times. The paper focuses on the editorials and letters to the editors that respond to the events of the Civil War. Covering the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, the thesis examines the major events of the war that affected and interested British newspapers and society. Some of the topics covered include the issue of the importance of Southern cotton to the English economy, the diplomatic issue of the Trent Affair and the threat to neutrality, as well as England's social concerns with the issue of slavery. The reactions of Britain's changing social classes, as well as England's dwindling interests in its North American possessions are also examined. By focusing exclusively on the newspaper reports of the Civil War, a biased view of the American Civil War can be seen, but one that was extremely influential to its readers. The paper focuses mainly on three London newspapers, the London Times, the religious-based Nonconformist, and the working class Economist . Through newspaper opinion, the thesis reevaluates and reexamines British reactions to the American Civil War, and the development of modern foreign opinion about America.
