Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, 2005.
This thesis examines how John Oldmixon constructed a particularly early vision of the British Empire in his book The British Empire in America and then how different groups throughout the early modern Atlantic world utilized that vision for their own purposes. Oldmixon's vision of the British America saw each colony as a semi-autonomous polity that was vital to the success of the empire. He believed that English progress and development transformed American land into British territory. Oldmixon's work helps us understand how early eighteenth century Britons grappled with the idea of an expanding overseas empire. From Britain to Germany to the Netherlands to Virginia, various people throughout the British Atlantic world encountered Oldmixon's book, transforming his ideas to accomplish their own projects. The adventures of The British Empire in America allow us to understand books and the ideas contained in them, free of the modern notions of nation and state.
