The purpose of this study was to develop a graduate-level curricular prototype, one that showed classically trained pianists how they could enhance their compositional skills through improvisation. The chosen repertoire, Quatour pour la fin du temps by the 20th-century French composer Olivier Messiaen, was guided by three factors: (1) Messiaen's works are underrepresented in the spheres of both performance and theoretical study; and (2) Messiaen uses a diverse set of techniques that can serve as varies examples in the prototype; and (3) his written reflections on composing provides direct information to performers and composers. A theoretical framework connects the threads of conscious thought and planning to those of intuition and spontaneity, building a solid rationale for improvisation as a precursor to composition. The scope of the prototype is 6 units, each meant to be implemented over the course of 1--3 weeks, depending on the teaching context. In consists of Introductory Activities, designed to enhance compositional creativity through improvisation using techniques such as Mental Transcription and Graphic Transcription both leading to improvisation; and Focus Activities revolving around Key Concepts such as Hindu rhythms and added values, which as culminate in improvisation. Student select one three-minute film clip for a film scoring final project. The prototype was piloted with one private student; data included a student journal, weekly student questionnaires and my own teaching journal. After changes were made based on the pilot, formative and summative evaluations were implemented to assess the overall effectiveness of prototype.
