"Does workplace friendship influence the employee's work attitudes?" Even though friendships at work can make the work experience more pleasant for most of us, it is relatively under-examined by researchers and scholars because most of the emphasis has been focused on the negative effects of workplace friendships, such as sexual harassment, favoritism, heavy dependence on others, and lessened loyalty to the organization. In addition, there is controversy over whether workplace friendship is possible inside bureaucracies. However, the positive potential for both individuals and the organization of having friendships at work may override the negative aspects.

This study examines the impact of workplace friendship on employees' attitudes toward their jobs and duties. Workplace friendship is conceptualized as friendship opportunity and quality of friendship (friendship prevalence) between superior and subordinates. Seoul City public officials and New Jersey State public officials were surveyed and the resultant data was analyzed using LISREL (SEM), ANOVA, and Regression analysis. The results indicate that workplace friendship has a positive impact on employees' work attitudes. This study also successfully separates workplace friendship into two separate variables: friendship opportunity and quality of friendship.

The findings indicate that quality of friendship as well as friendship opportunity can lead employees to have positive work attitudes, but quality of friendship has a stronger influence to employees' positive work attitudes than friendship opportunity. The public officials of both governments display the similar results. This study shows that the concept of workplace friendship may be applicable across national borders. Theoretically, the findings support the Leader-Member Exchange (LMX) theory in terms of emphasizing the importance of workplace friendship to increase employees' positive work attitudes and performance. And practically, the findings imply that organizations may benefit from encouraging friendships among the employees.
